Chiropractic Care - A natural way of healing
Chiropractic care is a healing art that focuses on disorders of our muscles, joints and the nervous system. These body systems are intricately connected. For example, when we are exposed to stress, our bodies respond with muscle tension and misaligned joints. This is why we feel pain, stiffness and tight muscles. Since these misaligned joints also affect our nervous system, they cause our bodily functions to become less efficient and more disorganized. Moreover, misalignments weaken our body’s ability to tolerate stress and often result in aches, pains and symptoms of ill health.
Your chiropractor is trained to find these misaligned joints and muscular imbalances with a chiropractic examination. Treatment includes precise and gentle corrections to release stuck joints, enabling the body to restore muscle tone and balance and allow irritated tissues to heal. Through a series of treatments your body is retrained to function in an efficient and coordinated way.
A manipulation of misaligned joints that involves a controlled force into a joint to help improve movement and release muscular tensions. Dr. Maher uses various methods such as manual manipulation, the Activator adjusting tool and the Drop Table to deliver a chiropractic adjustment that is tailored to meet the patients’ needs and comfort. Whether someone is recovering from an injury, experiencing chronic pain, age-related degeneration or discomfort related to pregnancy, a chiropractic adjustment can help.
Applied Kinesiology (AK)
Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a system that evaluates structural, chemical and emotional aspects of health. It uses manual muscle strength testing combined with other standard methods of diagnosis to guide treatment. AK is a non-invasive system of evaluating body function by:
· mapping out areas of muscle weakness or strength
· identifying regions of chronic muscle tension and/or fatigue
· finding specific muscle patterns that your body has adapted to as a result of injury or other stressor
The term “kinesiology” means the study of the mechanics of body movement. AK practitioners gather information about how your body is moving through posture, gait and muscle strength. These body movements help the practitioner pin point areas of dysfunction in your body. Once the problem is identified, the practitioner can customize the best therapy to correct it. AK integrates many complimentary therapies such as chiropractic adjustments, nutrition and cranial release to provide a holistic approach to healing and wellness care.
Cranial Release therapy is a gentle and effective way of restoring healthy communication between your brain and your body.
Your craniosacral system houses your brain and spinal cord, which makes up your central nervous system and controls almost every function in your body. Your central nervous system is heavily influenced by the structures and fluid that surround, protect and nourish it. When joints in the cranium jam, it creates a reflex which impacts muscle tone, strength and coordination throughout the body. Releasing tension points in the cranium helps alleviate muscle tension throughout the body, provides pain relief and results in healing. The manipulation of the cranium is performed with gentle stretching of the cranial joints or sutures. Patients of all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly, find this technique helpful for a range of conditions and very calming.
Ultrasound therapy uses high frequency sound waves, inaudible to the human ear, to stimulate tissues below the skin’s surface.
The sound waves are delivered to the patient using a smooth metal transducer head. The treatment head is moved over the surface of the skin in the area of concern or injury. Although ultrasound works by delivering vibration and creating a heating effect to injured tissues, the patient often does not feel much of anything. The therapeutic effects of ultrasound are commonly used in the recovery of musculoskeletal injuries and inflammatory conditions.
Benefits of therapeutic ultrasound include:
· Acceleration in healing time of soft tissue injuries
· Reduction of pain and muscle spasm
· Stimulation of collagen production, the main component in soft tissue, thus helping to rebuild injured tissue and minimize scar tissue
Pregnancy care - The Webster Technique
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic examination and adjustment to help reduce the effects of misalignments in the pelvis. The technique is commonly used with pregnant mothers to detect and alleviate pelvic imbalance and optimize function. Due to the changes in the body during pregnancy, such as the increase of hormones, weight gain and postural changes, pregnant women have a greater chance of pelvic imbalance than the general population. Additionally, because of the full body benefits of chiropractic care, pregnant mothers may experience significant advantages or improvements by seeing their chiropractor throughout pregnancy; optimizing health benefits for both the mother and her baby.
Chiropractic care for children can help support a child's overall health and wellness as they grow and reach their developmental milestones.
It works by removing interferences in their nervous system, which controls and coordinates the function of all systems in the body, such as the digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, hormonal, and immune system. Misalignments in a child’s spine or craniosacral system can put pressure on their nerves that can cause symptoms locally or elsewhere.
It has been shown that children who experience torticollis, poor posture, constipation, bedwetting, ear infections, colic, and feeding difficulties, to name a few, can be helped by a chiropractic adjustment. Studies have shown that parents report improved sleep, improved mood and improved immune system function as three unexpected outcomes with their child’s care. From infant to adolescent, only a fingertips touch and light pressure is used in a chiropractic adjustment for children. It is a safe and gentle way to correct spinal misalignments and improve a child’s overall wellbeing.
Nutritional Consultation and Testing
During a nutritional consultation and testing session you can first expect to go through a detailed health history and a review of any prior lab tests, such as blood tests if applicable, with the doctor.
Nutritional Testing may follow, which is a specific and non-invasive method for testing, analyzing and correcting underlying causes of ill-health. This analysis uses manual muscle testing and acupuncture points to identify nutritional deficiencies and imbalances in the body.
Throughout the consultation, the practitioner is looking for stressors in the body, such as food sensitivities and immune challenges that may be inhibiting the body's ability to heal. Results from Nutritional Consultation and Testing guide the practitioner's recommendations for dietary changes, supplementation and lifestyle modifications to help bring the body back to optimal function and health.
